How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer

Wild Hearts Production12 September 20247 min read

Choosing your wedding photographer is arguably the most important vendor decision you will make. The venue, the flowers, the cake, these are all beautiful. But they do not last. Your photographs do.

Start with Style

The first thing to identify is what style of photography resonates with you. Spend time on Instagram, Pinterest and photographer websites. Ask yourself: do you love light, airy images? Dark and moody? Editorial and fashion-forward? Or photojournalistic and documentary?

There is no right or wrong answer, but there is a right fit for you.

Look for Consistency

Anyone can have a handful of beautiful images. Look for photographers who consistently deliver exceptional work across entire galleries. Ask to see a full wedding gallery, not just highlights.

Meet Before You Book

Your photographer will spend more time with you on your wedding day than almost any other vendor. You should feel completely comfortable with them — comfortable enough to be completely yourself.

A pre-booking consultation, whether in person or via video call, tells you a great deal.

Understand What You Are Getting

Make sure you understand exactly what is included. How many hours? How many images? What is the turnaround time? Are albums included or available as add-ons? Is a second photographer included?

The cheapest quote is not always the best value.

Trust Your Gut

After meeting with your photographers and reviewing their work, trust your instinct. The right photographer will make you feel excited about your wedding day, not anxious.
